5 Traits of Successful Digital Marketers and Entrepreneurs

After being in business on my own for over 8 years now, I’ve observed several traits of successful digital marketers and entrepreneurs vs. mediocre ones. This isn’t necessarily a silver bullet formula, but they certainly are traits that contribute to a higher probability of success. I think it is important to point out the psychology of organizations, as it is often a major roadblock to innovation and change. Below, I will give the definition of each trait and give my point of view on each. Then you can agree or disagree, and apply the observations to your individual case.

pas·sion
definition:Strong and barely controllable emotion.

Let’s face it, if you don’t love what you do, it will be difficult to persevere through tough times. If you truly have passion for what you do, you will find a way to push through.

If you’re still looking for your passion, this is ok, and in fact I encourage it. There are too many people that settle for the status quo, even if it makes them unhappy.

Tip: Search for your passion on the side. Once you find it, build a side business or an initiative around it until you can support yourself or the initiative financially.

in·teg·ri·ty
definition: The quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness.

Information is easily searchable in the online world, so anything you say, whether it is digital or in the real world, can expose you. Therefore, it is important to have a high degree of integrity with any type of communication.

Tip: Just be honest. It will pay off in the long run.

mo·ti·va·tion
definition: The general desire or willingness of someone to do something.

As Michael Stelzner says in his interview with Entrepreneur Magazine, “You can grow a business with little money, but you have to work for it“. As a digital marketer or entrepreneur, it is your duty to push the boundaries of your idea, and the reality is that you can’t set any business or idea on auto-pilot if you want to be successful. Businesses and ideas require nurturing in order to grow, much like children require nurturing.

Tip: Focus on the big picture, plan the required hours it will take (realistically), execute, and measure.

gen·er·os·i·ty
definition: The quality of being kind and generous.

To establish meaningful relationships, you must give more than you take. This is something you’ve heard a million times before. Are you actually doing this? Keep track. Then ask yourself, what you can do to help someone today. Again, this requires big picture thinking.

Tip: Help 5 people this month, don’t ask for anything in return, and keep count of how many of those people come back to you in the next year with a favor in return (even if it’s something small)

o·pen-mind·ed
definition: Willing to consider new ideas; unprejudiced.

As digital marketers and entrepreneurs, we must always be on our toes. The business environment is moving faster than it ever has in history. Nimble organizations will rise to the top, while top heavy, bureaucratic organizations will slip to the bottom.

Tip: Be open to new insights and points of view. It might save your organization or catapult it to the top.

Conclusion

The traits of entrepreneurs and marketers have in fact not changed since the dawn of time, but they have morphed into a different meaning with the new digital world. Hopefully you will find new inspiration after reading this.
